Clutch Setup

*

AZ Bronze Disk w/ Sprung Hub & ACT Heavy Duty Pressure Plate

I just ordered this setup today (07/18/02) from HorsepowerFreaks.com. According to Chris, I am the first person he has sold this setup to for the NA MKIV. Since I am a "guinea pig" for this kit, I got it at a REALLY good price. It is slippable and will have no problem holding the 500rwhp I hope to make. I'll take pics whenever it arrives. I will also include a write-up of the installation (w/ pics), and give my opinions & feelings about this setup (after break-in).

Well, it's here. I should be installing it in less than two weeks. For now, here are some pics...

Installation was a breeze. Very easy, just took some time. I haven't driven it yet, because I still have to put oil in the tranny. I'm going to do that today and start breaking it in. I'll post pics on monday.

So far I have put about 50 miles on the clutch. Driveability is incredible!! It is very easy to drive on the street. There is a very small amount of chatter, but that's probably because I didn't resurface my flywheel. I think it will go away once it is broken in. *

Installation

Changing the clutch is not very hard, but it does take some time.

Tools needed...

-- Ratchet set w/ plenty of extensions
-- Universal Joint (not mandatory, but extremely helpful when taking off the top two bolts on the bell housing)
-- Method of choice for jacking the car up high enough
-- Floor Jack to hold tranny
-- Torque wrench
-- If you are replacing your pilot bearing, I would recommend a bearing puller

Note: I'm writing this tutorial from memory, so there is a good chance that I'm forgeting something.

I didn't get as many pictures as I wanted, but this is a very straight forward and simple installation.

1) After jacking the car up high enough, remove the exhaust system and heat shields.
2) Drain tranny and remove driveshaft
3) Remove shifter
4) Remove slave cylinder
5) Disconnect speed sensor connectors
6) Unbolt crossmember
7) Support trans with floor jack
8) Take off starter and bellhousing bolts
9) Pull tranny back, and lower to ground
10) Clutch and flywheel are easily accessable now

I didn't have any good stands, so I built some custom ramps...
